While I missed my students during the lockdowns – the merriment, conviviality, the tumble of bike helmets, shoes, school bags and coats in the hallway – I was surprised and relieved at how well online lessons worked. In fact, several of my students have chosen to continue to learn online, and I now also teach students in other countries, online.

I provide specific advice and (simple) instructions on how to set things up, ranging from where to position the computer, to how to tweak zoom to optimise it for music. I have found creative ways to use screen-sharing, and have developed an approach that takes advantage of the opportunities afforded by digital technologies.

Perhaps the most important requirements of all, though, are old-fashioned ones: the same degree of peace and quiet as you would expect for an in-person lesson and, in the case of children, the same parental engagement.
